Background of the Study
The adoption of digital record-keeping systems in educational institutions has gained momentum as part of the broader trend toward digitization in various sectors (Adewumi & Ojo, 2023). These systems enable schools to store and manage records electronically, leading to improved efficiency, security, and accessibility (Umar & Musa, 2024). However, the implementation of digital record-keeping in secondary schools, especially in rural areas like Lokoja, Kogi State, has been slow due to infrastructural challenges and resistance to change (Sule & Bello, 2025).
In Lokoja LGA, many schools still rely on paper-based methods for record-keeping, which can be cumbersome and prone to errors. The barriers to adopting digital systems include a lack of reliable internet access, insufficient technical skills among staff, and inadequate funding for digital tools. This study seeks to explore these challenges and provide recommendations to enhance the implementation of digital record-keeping in secondary schools in Lokoja.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential benefits of digital record-keeping, secondary schools in Lokoja LGA face numerous challenges in implementing these systems effectively. Schools often experience difficulties in transitioning from traditional paper-based methods to digital systems, which can affect the efficiency and accuracy of student records (Olanrewaju & Adebayo, 2025). These challenges may include inadequate infrastructure, lack of training, and resistance from staff and students. This study aims to identify the specific obstacles preventing successful implementation and offer strategies to overcome them.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the challenges faced by secondary schools in Lokoja LGA in implementing digital record-keeping systems.
To assess the level of awareness and readiness of school administrators and staff in adopting digital record-keeping systems.
To evaluate the impact of digital record-keeping on the efficiency of managing student records in secondary schools in Lokoja.
Research Questions
What are the challenges faced by secondary schools in Lokoja LGA in implementing digital record-keeping systems?
To what extent are school administrators and staff ready to adopt digital record-keeping systems?
How does the implementation of digital record-keeping systems impact the efficiency of managing student records in secondary schools?
Research Hypotheses
There is a significant relationship between internet access and the implementation of digital record-keeping systems in secondary schools in Lokoja.
The readiness of school administrators and staff is significantly influenced by the level of training and awareness on digital record-keeping systems.
The implementation of digital record-keeping systems significantly improves the efficiency of managing student records in secondary schools in Lokoja.
Significance of the Study
This research will provide important insights into the challenges of implementing digital record-keeping in secondary schools in Lokoja, Kogi State. The findings will help educational policymakers, school administrators, and other stakeholders understand the barriers to adoption and develop strategies to enhance the implementation of these systems, leading to more efficient management of student records.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will be limited to secondary schools in Lokoja LGA, Kogi State, with a focus on the challenges of implementing digital record-keeping systems. The study will not explore the design or development of the systems themselves. Limitations include the possibility of non-response from key stakeholders and the challenges of accessing sensitive data related to school records.
